Folding Wheelchair Ramps Australia – Solid Fold-in-Half Aluminium Ramps

Need to get a wheelchair or mobility scooter over a step, kerb or threshold — or into a vehicle — without a permanent ramp? A folding ramp is a solid aluminium ramp that folds in half (suitcase-style) with a carry handle, so it packs down compact, carries easily and sets up in seconds. Also searched as a suitcase ramp or fold-in-half ramp, it’s one of the simplest, sturdiest portable access solutions for everyday use.

As an Australian engineering company, Gilani Engineering can help you choose the right length and gradient for safe, compliant access — not just sell you a ramp.

Why a Folding Ramp?

  • Solid one-piece surface that folds in half — strong and stable underfoot
  • Suitcase fold with carry handle — compact to carry and store
  • Lightweight aluminium, rust-resistant for indoor and outdoor use
  • High-traction anti-slip surface for grip in wet or dry conditions
  • Raised side edges to help keep wheels on the ramp
  • No installation — unfold, position and use

What Folding Ramps Are Used For

  • Home entry steps, kerbs and door thresholds
  • Wheelchair and scooter vehicle loading — into a van, SUV or boot
  • Temporary or commercial accessibility where a fixed ramp isn’t practical
  • Travel and outings — folds flat and comes with you
  • Rental homes or shared spaces where you can’t install permanent access

Choosing the Right Length & Gradient (Important for Safety)

A ramp that’s too short creates a dangerously steep slope. The right length depends on the height you need to climb and whether the wheelchair is used independently or with help:

  • Independent wheelchair use: AS1428.1 recommends a 1:14 gradient — about 14cm of ramp per 1cm of height.
  • Assisted use or mobility scooters: a steeper gradient such as 1:10 is often acceptable — about 10cm of ramp per 1cm of height.

As a rough guide at 1:10, a 1.8m (6ft) folding ramp suits a step up to around 18cm; for greater heights choose a longer ramp or gentler gradient. When in doubt, longer is safer.

What to Check Before You Buy

  • Height to climb — measure the step, kerb or vehicle floor height
  • Load capacity — suits the combined weight of user plus wheelchair or scooter
  • Ramp length — longer gives a safer, gentler slope
  • Folded size — make sure it fits your boot or storage space

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a folding ramp?

A folding ramp is a solid aluminium ramp that folds in half (suitcase-style) with a carry handle, giving a strong continuous surface that packs down compact for transport and storage.

Is a folding ramp strong enough for a mobility scooter?

Yes — our aluminium folding ramps support wheelchairs and mobility scooters along with the user’s weight. Check each product’s rated capacity, and contact us if you’d like help matching one to your scooter.

Can I use a folding ramp to load a scooter into my vehicle?

Yes. Folding ramps are commonly used for loading into vans, SUVs and boots. The right length depends on your vehicle’s floor height — longer gives a safer, gentler slope.

What’s the difference between a folding ramp and a telescopic ramp?

A folding ramp is one solid piece that folds in half. A telescopic ramp is two separate channels/rails that extend to length — even more compact, and adjustable, but with two tracks rather than a full surface.

Do folding ramps need installation?

No — unfold, position securely against the step or vehicle, and you’re ready to go.
