Telescopic & Channel Wheelchair Ramps Australia – Portable Adjustable-Length Ramps

A telescopic ramp (also called channel ramps or track ramps) is a portable access solution made of two lightweight aluminium rails that slide out to the length you need. Because each channel extends and the pair packs down short, telescopic ramps are the most compact, adjustable option for getting a wheelchair or mobility scooter into a vehicle or over steps — and they store easily in a boot or cupboard.

As an Australian engineering company, Gilani Engineering can help you choose the right length and gradient for safe, compliant access — not just sell you a ramp.

Why Choose a Telescopic / Channel Ramp?

  • Adjustable length — extend each channel to suit the height you’re climbing
  • Two separate rails — lighter to carry one at a time, and they nest down short
  • Very compact when retracted — ideal for keeping in the car
  • Lightweight aluminium, rust-resistant for indoor and outdoor use
  • High-traction anti-slip channels with raised edges for wheel guidance
  • No installation — extend, position against the wheels’ path, and use

Best Used For

  • Wheelchair and scooter vehicle loading — into vans, SUVs and boots
  • Steps and kerbs where an adjustable length helps
  • Situations where storage space is tight and compact packing matters
  • Travel — the rails stow short and come with you
  • Disability and aged care support, at home or on the move

Note: channel ramps provide two tracks for the wheels rather than one continuous surface. For a full solid surface, see folding ramps below.

Choosing the Right Length & Gradient (Important for Safety)

A ramp that’s too short creates a dangerously steep slope. The right extended length depends on the height you’re climbing and whether use is independent or assisted:

  • Independent wheelchair use: AS1428.1 recommends a 1:14 gradient — about 14cm of ramp per 1cm of height.
  • Assisted use or mobility scooters: a steeper gradient such as 1:10 is often acceptable — about 10cm per 1cm of height.

Telescopic ramps let you extend to a longer, safer length when needed — but always extend enough for a safe slope rather than the minimum that reaches.

What to Check Before You Buy

  • Height to climb — vehicle floor or step height
  • Extended and retracted lengths — long enough for a safe slope, short enough to store
  • Load capacity — suits the combined weight of user plus wheelchair or scooter
  • Channel width — suits your wheelchair or scooter wheelbase

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a telescopic ramp?

A telescopic (channel) ramp is a pair of aluminium rails that slide out to the length you need and retract short for storage. The wheelchair or scooter wheels run along the two channels.

What’s the difference between telescopic and folding ramps?

A folding ramp is one solid surface that folds in half. A telescopic ramp is two separate channels that extend — even more compact and adjustable, but with two tracks rather than a full surface. Telescopic suits vehicle loading and tight storage; folding suits those who want one continuous surface.

Are telescopic ramps strong enough for a mobility scooter?

Yes — our aluminium channel ramps support wheelchairs and mobility scooters with the user’s weight. Check each product’s rated capacity and channel width, and contact us for help matching them to your scooter.

Can I adjust the length?

Yes — that’s the main advantage. Extend the channels to give a safe slope for your vehicle or step height, then retract them for compact storage.
