Powered Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter Hoist for Cars
Loading mobility equipment into a vehicle can be physically demanding, particularly when the equipment must be lifted frequently. The BT-80 uses a powered lifting arm to raise and position compatible equipment into the vehicle boot, reducing the amount of manual lifting required.
The BT-80 may help:
- reduce repetitive lifting demands on carers and family members;
- make regular wheelchair or scooter transport more manageable;
- support greater independence for suitable users;
- provide controlled powered lifting and lowering;
- reduce the likelihood of dropping or damaging mobility equipment during manual lifting; and
- make loading and unloading more consistent.
The operator must still attach the equipment correctly, control the hoist and guide the wheelchair or scooter into its storage position. Training and a practical handover demonstration should be completed before use.
Wheelchair Boot Hoist Vehicle Compatibility
The BT-80 can be installed in many compatible SUVs, hatchbacks, station wagons, vans, MPVs and 4WDs. Compatibility cannot be determined by vehicle type alone.
Before recommending a wheelchair boot hoist, we assess:
- Vehicle make, model and year;
- boot opening height and width;
- available internal load space;
- vehicle mounting locations;
- wheelchair or scooter weight;
- folded equipment dimensions;
- equipment lifting and attachment points;
- the operator’s ability to attach and control the hoist; and
- the required 2-way or 4-way movement.
Depending on the vehicle and equipment, the parcel shelf may need to be removed or a rear seat may need to be folded. We assess these requirements before installation.
Suitable Wheelchairs and Mobility Scooters
The BT-80 is designed to lift compatible mobility equipment weighing no more than 80kg. It may be used as a:
- wheelchair hoist for a car boot – for compatible manual and folding wheelchairs;
- electric wheelchair car hoist – for compatible folding and compact powerchairs;
- mobility scooter hoist for a car – for compatible travel and compact mobility scooters;
- powerchair boot lifter – where the equipment weight and dimensions are suitable; or
- vehicle boot lifter – for other approved mobility equipment within the rated capacity.
The 80kg rating does not mean every device below 80kg will fit every vehicle. The folded dimensions, shape, lifting points and required movement path must also be checked.
For compatible equipment weighing more than 80kg, consider the BT-100 Boot Hoist – 100kg.
2-Way vs 4-Way Wheelchair Boot Hoists
| Configuration | Powered movement | Common application |
|---|---|---|
| 2-way boot hoist | Powered lifting up and lowering down. | May suit lighter or more easily guided equipment where the operator can manually position it within the boot. |
| 4-way boot hoist | Powered lifting, lowering and horizontal movement into and out of the vehicle. | May reduce manual positioning demands and assist with heavier or more difficult-to-guide equipment. |
The appropriate configuration depends on the equipment weight and dimensions, available boot space and the operator’s physical abilities. Gilani Engineering can assess these factors before recommending a configuration.
How a Car Boot Hoist Works
- Open the vehicle boot and prepare the wheelchair or scooter for loading.
- Position the lifting arm and attach the approved lifting strap or attachment to the equipment.
- Confirm that the attachment is secure and the equipment is within the hoist’s rated capacity.
- Use the controller to raise the wheelchair or scooter.
- Guide or power the equipment into the vehicle, depending on the hoist configuration.
- Lower the equipment into its approved storage position.
- Secure the equipment for transport using the appropriate restraint method.
These steps are a general overview only. Users must follow the instructions, training and vehicle-specific handover information supplied with their installation.

Information for Occupational Therapists
When considering a wheelchair or mobility scooter boot hoist, the assessment should include more than the weight of the mobility device.
Important considerations include:
- the participant’s ability to attach and operate the hoist;
- whether assistance will be available;
- the mobility device’s weight, shape and folded dimensions;
- the vehicle boot opening and available load space;
- the required lifting path;
- the need for powered horizontal movement;
- manual handling demands during attachment and positioning;

John Cowburn –
Living in regional Queensland options for boot hoists are very limited. After talking with Raj at Gilani, I decided to buy the hoist and fit it myself (I do have a mechanical background in the automotive industry). The hoist fitted well into my Kia Sportage and has made loading and unloading our Airhawk wheelchair easy. The hoist was not difficult to fit, if you do decide to fit one take your time in the pre fit planning to make sure of clearances, including tailgate closing. Raj was a great help in his expertise. A great product.
