Lithium Battery Safety Guidelines
Gilani Engineering тАУ Safe Handling, Charging, Storage & Disposal
Lithium batteries are reliable and long-lasting, but they must be handled with care. Please follow the guidelines below to ensure safety and extend battery life.
1. Safe Handling
Always check your battery before use. Do not use if cracked, swollen, leaking, or damaged.
Avoid dropping, crushing, or piercing the battery.
Keep away from water, fire, and extreme heat.
Never try to disassemble or modify a battery.
Only use batteries and chargers approved by Gilani Engineering or the product
manufacturer.
2. Safe Charging
Use only the original or approved charger supplied with your device.
Charge in a dry, ventilated area тАФ avoid soft surfaces (beds, couches, or carpets).
Do not leave batteries charging unattended, especially overnight.
Disconnect the charger when fully charged.
If the battery becomes hot, smokes, or smells unusual, stop charging immediately and
place it on a safe, non-flammable surface.
3. Safe Storage
Store in a cool, dry place between 10┬░C and 25┬░C.
Keep away from direct sunlight, heaters, or freezing conditions.
Do not leave batteries inside cars. Temperatures can exceed 60┬░C, leading to
swelling, leaking, or fire. Always remove batteries from scooters, wheelchairs, or
other devices before leaving them in a vehicle.
For long-term storage (over 3 months), keep batteries at around 50% charge.
Avoid contact with metal objects (keys, coins, tools) that may cause short-circuits.
Use original packaging or a protective case to prevent physical damage.
Keep in a dry environment, away from damp or humid areas.
4. Safe Disposal & Recycling
Never dispose of lithium batteries in household rubbish or fire.
Take used, damaged, or end-of-life batteries to an authorised recycling facility or
battery drop-off point.
Tape over exposed terminals before disposal to prevent short-circuiting.
Contact your local council, recycling centre, or Gilani Engineering for disposal
guidance.
5. Emergency Actions
If a battery leaks: avoid contact, wear gloves, and wash skin immediately with soap and water.
If a battery catches fire: use a Class D fire extinguisher (for metal fires) or cover with sand/soil. Do not use water.
Seek medical help if exposed to leaking battery contents.
WARNING! Fires involving lithium-ion batteries can occur rapidly and can be violent, involving toxic smoke and vapours, flames, and molten projectiles. If your vehicle or battery emits sparks, smoke or flames, evacuate the area and call Triple Zero (000). Close doors if safe to do so.
Warning signs include:
тАв Pungent odours тАв Discolouration, blistering, bulging, or swelling of the casing тАв Leaking electrolyte
тАв Heating up and becoming extremely hot to touch
тАв Abnormal popping, hissing or crackling sounds, smoke, and fumes Never touch a swollen or ruptured device or battery with bare hands. Seek urgent medical assistance if anyone has been exposed to spilled electrolyte, flying debris, smoke or vapours, or flames.
