Description

Harmar Powered Wheelchair Carrier — Tow Bar Mounted Powerchair Lift | Australia

Carry your power wheelchair on the back of your vehicle — without losing your boot space or lifting a thing.

A powered wheelchair carrier mounts to the tow bar at the rear of your vehicle and lifts your powerchair electrically at the touch of a switch. There is no manual lifting, no ramps to push up, and no wrestling a heavy chair into the boot. Your wheelchair travels safely outside the vehicle, leaving your entire cargo area and passenger seats free.

We supply the Harmar powered powerchair carrier range in three capacities — from 159kg to 204kg — so you can match the carrier to your chair. Every installation includes a vehicle assessment by our engineering team.

Send us your vehicle and wheelchair details for a compatibility check and quote →

Choose Your Model

All three models are fully powered, secure your chair with four Q’Straint retractors, and require no modification to your wheelchair. The difference is capacity — and which one suits your chair and vehicle.

ModelCapacityBest forTow bar
AL500159kg (350 lb)Most standard power wheelchairsClass II or greater
AL500HD181kg (400 lb)Heavier power wheelchairsClass III or greater
AL580-HDX204kg (450 lb)Large mid-wheel drive powerchairs with drive wheels up to 35cmClass III or greater

Not sure which model suits your chair? Send us your wheelchair make, model and weight and we will confirm the right one before you order.

Powered Lifting and Folding — No Manual Effort

Unlike a manual carrier or ramp where you push the chair up yourself, these carriers do the work for you. Guide your powerchair onto the platform, secure it, and the lift raises it to travel height at the press of a switch. When empty, the platform folds up vertically against the back of the vehicle to keep a low profile.

  • Fully powered lifting and folding — operated by a switch, no lifting required
  • Keeps your boot free — the wheelchair travels outside the vehicle
  • Folds vertically when empty — lower profile for parking and storage
  • No modification to your wheelchair — your chair stays exactly as it is

Four Q’Straint Retractors Hold Your Chair Secure

Securement is where these carriers stand apart. All models use four self-tensioning Q’Straint retractors — a recognised name in wheelchair restraint systems — so your chair is held firmly from four points.

Position your powerchair on the platform, clip in the four retractors, and you are done. There are no loose straps to thread or tie, and nothing to guess at. The AL580-HDX adds a padded hold-down arm and adjustable wheel cradles for additional security from above.

  • Four self-tensioning Q’Straint retractors — quick to clip on and release
  • Aluminium deck shields your chair from road debris
  • Padded hold-down arm and wheel cradles (AL580-HDX)
  • Licence plate mount included

Will It Fit My Vehicle?

These carriers mount to a rear tow bar receiver and suit a wide range of SUVs, utes, 4WDs, vans and people movers.

Every installation begins with a vehicle assessment. Because the carrier holds a heavy load at the rear of your vehicle, we confirm your tow bar type, its rating and your vehicle’s suitability before anything is ordered or fitted — so there are no surprises.

Before installation we check three things together:

  • Your vehicle — make, model, year, and tow bar type and rating
  • Your wheelchair — make, model, weight and dimensions
  • Total load — the combined weight of the carrier plus your powerchair must be within your tow bar’s rating

Send us your vehicle and wheelchair details and we will confirm compatibility before you buy.

Available Options

  • Battery pack — a dedicated power source, so the lift does not need to be hard-wired to your vehicle battery
  • Swing-away — swings the folded, unloaded carrier aside so you can open your boot or tailgate without removing the lift
  • MultiView backup camera — a two-lens camera mounted on the lift platform, giving you a clear reversing view whether the platform is stowed or loaded
  • Wheelchair cover — protects your powerchair from weather and road grime while travelling
  • Licence plate riser — keeps your number plate visible when the carrier is fitted

Professional Assessment and Installation

We do not simply ship these carriers and leave you to work it out. Every carrier is assessed and installed by our team, because a heavy lift mounted at the rear of a vehicle needs to be right.

  1. Vehicle assessment — we check your vehicle, tow bar type and rating, and confirm the carrier suits your setup
  2. Wheelchair check — we confirm your powerchair’s weight and dimensions and recommend the right model
  3. Quote and documentation — including NDIS paperwork if you need it
  4. Installation — fitted and wired by our team, then tested
  5. Demonstration — we show you how to load, secure and operate it before you drive away

As an engineering company specialising in vehicle modifications, we understand vehicle integration — not just the product. Contact our team to arrange your assessment.

Australian Warranty and Support

Your warranty and support are with Gilani Engineering here in Australia. If you have a question or an issue, you deal with our team locally rather than chasing an overseas manufacturer.

Every powered powerchair carrier we supply is covered by a 12-month warranty. This is in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law.

Carrier or Boot Hoist — Which Suits You?

There is more than one way to take your wheelchair with you. The right choice depends on your chair, your vehicle, and whether you want it inside or outside.

NDIS, Support at Home & DVA Funding

A powered wheelchair carrier may be funded through several pathways for eligible Australians:

  • NDIS — as a registered NDIS provider, we supply quotes and supporting documentation. Vehicle equipment may be funded where assessed as reasonable and necessary, usually with an OT recommendation.
  • Support at Home — for Australians aged 65+ receiving government-funded aged care through My Aged Care, subject to assessed needs.
  • DVA — eligible veterans may access equipment through the DVA Rehabilitation Appliances Program (RAP).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a powered wheelchair carrier?

A powered wheelchair carrier mounts to your vehicle’s tow bar and lifts your power wheelchair electrically onto a platform at the rear of the vehicle. Unlike a manual ramp carrier, you do not push or lift the chair yourself — the lift does the work at the press of a switch.

Which model do I need?

It depends on your wheelchair’s weight. The AL500 carries up to 159kg, the AL500HD up to 181kg, and the AL580-HDX up to 204kg with drive wheels to 35cm. Send us your chair’s make, model and weight and we will confirm the right one.

Do I need to modify my wheelchair?

No. These carriers require no modification to your powerchair — your chair stays exactly as it is.

Does it fit my car?

The carrier mounts to a rear tow bar receiver and suits many SUVs, utes, 4WDs, vans and people movers. We assess your vehicle, tow bar type and rating before installation to confirm it suits your setup.

Will it block my reversing camera?

A rear-mounted carrier can obstruct your reversing camera. The optional MultiView camera is a two-lens unit mounted on the lift platform that gives you a clear view whether the platform is stowed or loaded.

Can I still open my boot with the carrier fitted?

With the optional swing-away, yes. It lets you swing the folded, unloaded carrier aside to reach your boot or tailgate without removing the lift.

Does it need to be wired to my car battery?

The lift is hard-wired to the vehicle battery as standard. An optional dedicated battery pack is available if you prefer not to wire it to the vehicle.

What warranty do I get?

A 12-month warranty, with support provided by our Australian team — in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law.

Is NDIS funding available?

It may be. As a registered NDIS provider we can supply quotes and documentation to support your application, and can advise on Support at Home and DVA pathways.
