Why Engineering Expertise Matters When Choosing Mobility Equipment
Gilani Engineering is a registered NDIS provider, and we deliver mobility scooters, power wheelchairs, hospital beds, hoists, ramps and grab rails across the Northern Territory тАФ Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, and out to remote communities. The Territory is one of the toughest places in Australia for mobility equipment тАФ long distances between towns, footpaths that run out, and a climate that ranges from Top End humidity to desert extremes тАФ so choosing equipment that's built for it matters. The products below are the ones we'd put in front of an NT customer first.

Wheelchairs & Access Solutions
For NT conditions this is the pick of the range. The Heavy Duty Mobility Scooter runs a 70km range on lithium batteries тАФ which handle the Territory's heat far better than older battery types тАФ supports up to 200kg, and rides on large 14тА│ tyres built for distance and rougher ground, from Darwin's foreshore paths to red-dirt edges in the Centre. Where towns are spread out and footpaths run out, range and stability matter more than anything. On sale now.

When distances mean a car or flight before you even start moving around, a scooter that folds matters. The LITERIDER is one of the lightest folding 4-wheel electric scooters available тАФ it folds into a car boot and is manageable for trips into Darwin, Casuarina, the Mall, or a community visit. At $2,390 it's a genuinely affordable lightweight option for getting around town.
$2,390.00
For higher-capacity users, the Super King is one of the few genuine 350kg-rated electric wheelchairs in Australia тАФ built by Gilani Engineering with a reinforced frame (not a standard chair made wider), an extra-wide seat up to 800mm, dual 250W motors and a reclining backrest. It's included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG no. 485277). Because it's made to order and configured to the individual, we prepare an itemised quote rather than a fixed price. It's a reinforced, non-folding chair built for stability at higher loads тАФ confirm doorway and vehicle clearance before ordering (overall width approx. 910mm).
For the Territory's distances тАФ flights between Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs, long highway and community drives, transport while seated in the chair тАФ we carry a range of statically crash-tested wheelchairs with tie-down points, built to be secured and travelled in safely.

Air Hawk & Falcon тАФ Crash-Tested Folding Power Chairs
The Air Hawk is a lightweight foldable power wheelchair with a reinforced aluminium frame, dual motors and an airline-approved lithium battery; the Falcon adds a step-less reclining backrest for longer trips. Both are part of our D09 series, included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG no. 372653, Class 1 medical device), statically crash tested with tie-down points, and can be widened for bariatric users. For a Territory where flying between centres is normal, an airline-ready folding power chair is hard to beat.
The King Chair is a heavy-duty 300kg-capacity power chair that still folds тАФ a rare combination. It runs a reinforced frame, dual motors, a sine-wave controller with app and remote control, front and rear suspension, off-road tyres and anti-tilt wheels, with a driving range up to 30km, and it's airline approved and foldable for transport тАФ a strong fit for the Territory's distances and rougher ground. It comes in two versions: the standard King Chair (from $5,990), and a statically crash-tested version ($7,490) that adds integrated tie-down points, a headrest and a scripted backrest for users who need to travel safely while seated.
$5,990 - $7,490
For users with complex postural needs тАФ including cerebral palsy тАФ who also need to travel safely while seated, our statically crash tested tilt and reclining wheelchair combines advanced positioning with transport-ready safety. It has a statically crash tested frame with integrated tie-down points for secure anchoring in an accessible vehicle, tilt-in-space and reclining functions for pressure relief and posture support, an aluminium frame, and adjustable headrest, armrests and elevating footrests. In a Territory where appointments and services can mean long trips in an accessible vehicle, a chair built to be secured and travelled in matters.
Not everyone needs a powered chair. We carry a full range of manual wheelchairs тАФ lightweight folding chairs for travel and occasional use, self-propelled and attendant-propelled options, and bariatric manual wheelchairs for higher weight capacities. They're easy to transport across the Territory's distances and a practical option as a backup or second chair. Tell us how and where it'll be used and we'll help you pick the right one.
For anyone who needs a bit of extra support on their feet rather than a wheelchair, our rollators тАФ wheeled walkers with a seat and brakes тАФ are often the starting point, alongside walking frames, walking sticks and other walking aids. Lightweight, foldable and easy to take in the car, they suit getting around the house, the shops or a community visit.
The Smartwheels folds itself automatically at the press of a button тАФ useful when you're loading a chair into a vehicle on your own before a long drive. It's app and joystick controlled, with all-terrain wheels, double shock absorption, flip-up armrests, a range up to 25km and a 100kg capacity. Compact enough for a car boot, capable enough for a full day out.
Beyond the chairs above, we carry a broader range of electric wheelchairs тАФ compact indoor powerchairs for tighter spaces through to outdoor models тАФ plus cushions, batteries, chargers and parts. Not sure whether a scooter or a power chair suits your situation? Tell us and we'll talk it through.

NDIS Funding Support
As a registered NDIS provider we prepare itemised, NDIS-ready quotes and work with your OT. We also work with DVA and Afterpay. For Territorians not covered by national programs, the NT Government runs the Disability Equipment Program (DEP), which includes two services relevant to mobility:
Territory Equipment Program
Provides prescribed equipment, aids and appliances to eligible NT residents with a functional impairment, where they aren't eligible to receive equipment through the NDIS, Aged Care, DVA or similar. An approved health professional applies on the client's behalf.
Seating Equipment Assessment and Technical Service
The NT Government service providing customised seating, wheeled mobility and pressure care equipment, including modifications to prescribed wheelchairs and fabrication of customised seating, for residents with intermediate to complex needs.
What "statically crash tested" means
There are two kinds of wheelchair crash testing. A dynamic test runs the chair through a simulated collision on an impact sled тАФ the basis for full certification as a vehicle seat. A static test applies strong controlled forces to the frame and its tie-down anchor points to verify they hold under load. Our crash-tested chairs are statically crash tested, with reinforced frames and integrated tie-down points, so they're built and verified to be secured properly during transport. If you need a wheelchair certified specifically as a seat in a moving vehicle, talk to your OT about the right option тАФ we're happy to provide the certification documentation for your assessment.

Choosing Equipment for Northern Territory Conditions
The Territory is harder on equipment than almost anywhere in Australia. A few things worth weighing up:
- Heat & humidity тАФ Top End humidity and Centre heat are tough on batteries and electronics. Lithium batteries handle it better than older types.
- Wet season тАФ sudden heavy downpours are common. Avoid water exposure and plan for shelter.
- Dust & remote terrain тАФ red dust and grit affect moving parts. Regular cleaning helps, and larger tyres suit rough ground.
- UV & upholstery тАФ intense year-round sun cracks and fades cheap seat materials. UV-resistant upholstery and storing equipment out of direct sun both help.
- Distance & range тАФ towns are far apart and footpaths run out quickly. Higher-range, sturdier models suit the NT far better than compact indoor-only scooters.
Delivered & Supported Across the NT
We're Sydney-based and deliver Territory-wide тАФ Darwin, Palmerston, Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs and remote communities. We support NT customers by phone and video: consultations before you order, a video walkthrough when your equipment arrives, carer training over video for hoists and beds, and remote troubleshooting. For repairs and warranty work we send genuine parts and guide fitting over video тАФ which, given the distances involved, is usually far faster than waiting for a technician тАФ with agents available if a job needs hands-on help. NDIS, DVA, TEP and SEAT paperwork is handled remotely for your OT or plan manager.
