Choosing the Right Motor Type

Lift chairs come in dual motor and quad motor configurations. The right choice depends on how you use the chair, how long you sit in it, and the level of positioning control you need.

Dual motor lift chairs (two motor)

The backrest and footrest are independently controlled тАФ so you can raise your legs while remaining upright, or recline the back without lifting the footrest. This gives infinite position adjustment for maximum comfort and circulation control, and is the most recommended option for everyday home use. Dual motor chairs can recline to near-flat for users who rest or sleep in their chair.

Our dual motor options include the Chicago Lift Recliner (up to 250kg, natural leather, massage and heat) and the Electric Lift Recliner in ECO leather.

Quad motor lift chairs (four motor)

Independent control of the headrest, lumbar, backrest, and footrest. Designed for users who need precise positioning support, pressure care management, or have been recommended a clinical-grade seating solution by an occupational therapist. The highest level of adjustability for users with complex seating needs or who spend extended periods in their chair.

See the Configura Comfort Lift Chair for a quad motor higher-support option, or the Royale Chadwick Mini тАФ a compact quad motor chair designed specifically for users up to 167 cm, available in soft touch fabric, genuine leather, and Oxford plush leather, with USB charging port included.

Single motor lift chairs

The backrest and footrest move together as one action. Simple to operate and suitable for users who mainly need assistance standing up and sitting down rather than full positional adjustment. The Darwin Electric Recliner is a popular single motor option available in Vanilla Beige, Red, and Midnight Blue.

Upholstery Options тАФ Fabric, Leather and ECO Leather

Our lift recliners are available in three upholstery types. The right choice depends on your lifestyle, care needs, and personal preference.

ECO leather (synthetic / PU leather)

The most practical choice for everyday home use and care environments. ECO leather wipes clean easily, is resistant to spills, and does not absorb odours тАФ making it a popular choice for users with incontinence concerns or in aged care settings. Maintains a smart appearance with less maintenance than genuine leather. Available on the Electric Lift Recliner in ECO leather.

Leather

Premium natural leather upholstery provides a luxurious feel and long-term durability. Breathable and comfortable for longer sitting periods. Available on the Chicago Lift Recliner in chestnut brown natural leather.

Fabric

Soft, breathable, and available in a wider range of colours than leather options тАФ making fabric lift chairs easier to match to existing home d├йcor. A popular choice for users who prioritise warmth and softness over easy-clean practicality. Available across selected models тАФ contact our team to confirm fabric availability on specific chairs.

Comfort Features тАФ Massage, Heat and Battery Backup

Our lift recliners include comfort and safety features designed for longer daily use:

  • Massage тАФ built-in massage function targets back, lumbar, and leg zones for comfort and circulation support during longer sitting periods
  • Heat тАФ lumbar and seat heating helps reduce stiffness and muscle fatigue, particularly beneficial for users with arthritis or back pain
  • Emergency battery backup тАФ if the power goes out while the chair is reclined, the battery backup allows the chair to return to the upright position safely. Essential for users who live alone or who would be unable to exit a reclined chair without power assistance.
  • Lay-flat / near-flat recline тАФ dual motor chairs can recline to near-horizontal for users who rest or sleep in their chair, or need to manage oedema through full leg elevation

Available on the Chicago Lift Recliner. Contact our team to confirm which features are available on specific models.

Choosing the Right Size

A lift chair that does not fit properly will be uncomfortable and may not provide the postural support you need. Before purchasing, confirm the seat width, seat depth, and seat-to-floor height against the user’s measurements.

Our lift recliners are available in two sizes to suit different body builds:

DimensionSmallStandard / Big
Seat width50 cm60 cm
Overall width80 cm88 cm
Overall depth92 cm92 cm
Overall height106 cm106 cm
  • Small (50 cm seat width) тАФ suits slimmer or smaller-framed users
  • Standard / Big (60 cm seat width) тАФ suits most adults and larger users who need more seat width for comfort. The Chicago Lift Recliner supports up to 250 kg.

For users requiring a compact chair, the Royale Chadwick Mini is specifically designed for users up to 167 cm with a smaller footprint.

Not sure which size suits you? Visit our showroom at 14 Smithfield Rd, Smithfield NSW for a trial sit, or call (02) 8740 8963. An occupational therapist assessment can also help match the right chair to your measurements.

Wall Clearance and Space Requirements

One of the most common practical questions before purchasing a lift chair is how much space it needs from the wall. Standard lift recliners require 15тАУ30 cm of clearance behind the chair to recline fully.

If your room space is limited, wall-hugger models require as little as 10тАУ15 cm clearance тАФ the mechanism slides the seat forward as the backrest reclines, so the chair does not need to move away from the wall. If space is a concern, contact our team to confirm which models have wall-hugger capability.

Who Benefits from a Lift Chair?

Lift chairs тАФ also called rise recliners, sit-to-stand chairs, or riser recliners тАФ are recommended for a wide range of users:

  • Older Australians who find it increasingly difficult to stand from a standard chair
  • Post-surgery recovery тАФ particularly following hip replacements, knee surgery, or spinal procedures
  • Arthritis тАФ reduced grip and lower limb strength makes standing from low seats difficult and painful
  • Parkinson’s disease тАФ the controlled lift mechanism assists the transition to standing without sudden movement
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neurological conditions affecting strength and balance
  • Users managing oedema or circulation issues тАФ leg elevation and lay-flat recline support better circulation
  • Aged care residents тАФ our lift chairs for aged care are built for high-demand daily facility use
  • Electric wheelchair and mobility scooter users who need a comfortable, supportive seat at home тАФ read more about lift chair benefits

When Is a Higher Support Chair Needed?

Some users require a higher level of clinical support beyond standard comfort-focused lift recliners:

  • Long periods of sitting requiring pressure care management
  • Specific positioning or postural support requirements
  • Complex seating needs recommended by an occupational therapist
  • Users in residential aged care or disability accommodation

In these cases, the Configura Comfort Lift Chair тАФ a quad motor clinical seating solution тАФ may be more appropriate. Contact our team to discuss complex seating requirements.

NDIS participants

Lift chairs may be funded under NDIS Assistive Technology supports where considered reasonable and necessary for the participant’s mobility needs. As a registered NDIS provider, Gilani Engineering provides compliant quotes and all supporting documentation for plan managers and support coordinators.

Support at Home (aged care)

For Australians aged 65 and over receiving government-funded aged care support through My Aged Care, lift chairs may be approved under the Support at Home program depending on assessed support needs and budget. Our team can assist with quotes and documentation for your Support at Home provider. Contact us to discuss your situation.

DVA (Department of Veterans’ Affairs)

Eligible veterans may access lift chair funding through the DVA Rehabilitation Appliances Program (RAP). A GP referral and occupational therapist assessment are typically required. Our team provides DVA-compatible documentation.

Not sure which pathway applies?

Our team works with NDIS participants, Support at Home recipients, DVA applicants, support coordinators, and occupational therapists across Australia. Contact us and we will help identify the right funding pathway and suitable chair for your needs.

Practical Considerations Before You Buy

  • Wall clearance тАФ standard models need 15тАУ30 cm; wall-hugger models need as little as 10тАУ15 cm
  • Upholstery тАФ ECO leather wipes clean easily (practical for care settings); fabric is softer with more colour options; leather is premium and breathable
  • Emergency battery backup тАФ essential for users who live alone or would be unable to exit a reclined chair without assistance during a power outage
  • Controls тАФ all our lift chairs use a simple hand-held remote. Quad motor models have more buttons but remain straightforward to use

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a lift chair, rise recliner, and sit-to-stand chair?

These terms are used interchangeably in Australia. All refer to the same type of chair тАФ a powered recliner with a motorised lifting mechanism that tilts the seat forward to assist the user when standing. “Rise recliner” and “riser recliner” are more common in aged care and OT contexts; “lift chair” and “sit-to-stand chair” are used more broadly.

What is the difference between dual motor and quad motor?

A dual motor (two motor) chair independently controls the backrest and footrest тАФ giving infinite position adjustment. A quad motor (four motor) chair also independently controls the headrest and lumbar, providing the highest level of positioning and pressure care support. For most everyday home users, dual motor is the recommended choice. Quad motor is recommended for users with complex seating needs or who spend extended periods in their chair.

Do your lift chairs have massage and heat?

Yes. Selected models include massage and heat functions. The Chicago Lift Recliner includes both massage and heat as standard. Contact our team to confirm which features are available on specific models.

What is emergency battery backup on a lift chair?

Emergency battery backup allows the chair to return to the upright position during a power outage тАФ essential for users who would be unable to exit a fully reclined position without assistance. If you live alone or your carer is not always present, emergency battery backup is strongly recommended.

Which lift chair is best for everyday use?

For most users, a dual motor lift recliner with massage and heat is the most popular everyday choice. The Chicago Lift Recliner is our most popular model тАФ dual motor, up to 250 kg, massage, heat, and natural leather upholstery.

Are lift chairs suitable for elderly users?

Yes. Lift chairs are specifically designed to assist elderly Australians who need help sitting and standing safely. The powered lift mechanism reduces strain on knees, hips, and lower back тАФ the key reason OTs and GPs recommend them for older users.

How do I know which size lift chair suits me?

Our lift recliners come in two sizes тАФ small (50 cm seat width, 80 cm overall width) and standard/big (60 cm seat width, 88 cm overall width). Both are 106 cm high and 92 cm deep. The small size suits slimmer or smaller-framed users; the standard/big suits most adults and larger users who need more seat width. The Chicago Lift Recliner supports up to 250 kg. For users up to 167 cm, the compact Royale Chadwick Mini is also available. If unsure, visit our showroom for a trial sit or contact our team.

What fabric options are available?

Our lift recliners are available in ECO leather (synthetic/PU leather тАФ easy clean, practical for care use), natural leather (premium, breathable), and fabric (soft, more colour options). Contact our team to confirm upholstery availability on specific models.

Can I use my NDIS or Support at Home funding for a lift chair?

Yes, in many cases. Lift chairs may be funded under NDIS Assistive Technology supports or through the Support at Home aged care program where assessed as reasonable and necessary. DVA funding is also available for eligible veterans. See our NDIS page or contact our team to discuss eligibility and request a compliant quote.

Are lift chairs suitable for NDIS participants?

Yes. Lift chairs may be funded under NDIS Assistive Technology supports where considered reasonable and necessary for the participant’s mobility needs. As a registered NDIS provider, we prepare all required documentation. Learn more about our NDIS support.

What is a power lift chair?

A power lift chair is an electric recliner with a powered lifting mechanism that tilts the entire seat forward тАФ gently raising the user toward a standing position. This reduces physical strain and fall risk compared to pushing up from a standard chair. Read our full guide on what a recliner chair is.

When should I consider a higher support chair?

If you require pressure care management, complex postural support, or have been assessed by an OT as needing clinical-grade seating, the Configura Comfort Lift Chair may be more appropriate than a standard comfort recliner.

Do lift chairs help with mobility?

Yes. The powered lift assist helps users stand safely and independently, reducing strain on joints and minimising fall risk. For a full overview of physical and wellbeing benefits, read our lift recliner chair benefits guide.

Are lift chairs suitable for aged care facilities?

Yes. We supply a dedicated range of lift chairs for aged care built for high-demand daily use. These include dual motor systems, reinforced frames, easy-clean upholstery, and bulk pricing with formal quotations for facility procurement.
